The saxophone (very commonly referred to as simply a sax) is a musical instrument that is conical-bored, and is considered a member of the woodwind family. Saxophones are played with a single-reed mouthpiece that is similar to the clarinet, and are usually made of brass. Invented by Adolphe Sax in the early 1840s and patented in 1846 in two groups of seven instruments each, each series of saxophones consisted of instruments of various sizes in alternating transposition.
The series pitched in B
and E, designed for military bands, has proved extremely popular. Most
saxophones used in public today are from this series. There are,
however, a few saxophones remaining from the less popular orchestral
series, pitched in C and F.
